Herb Ritts began his career in the late 1970s and quickly gained an international reputation as a master of fine art and commercial photography. In addition to producing memorable portraits and timely editorial fashion layouts, he created several successful advertising campaigns and directed numerous influential and award-winning music videos and commercials. His fine art photography has been the subject of museum and gallery exhibitions worldwide, with his works residing in many significant public and private collections. Loriki with Spear, Africa was a favorite of Mr. Ritts’s from a personal project he embarked on while traveling in Africa. Ritts passed away on December 26, 2002, from AIDS-related complications. He faithfully committed himself to HIV/AIDS-related causes and contributed to many charities during his lifetime. Today, the Herb Ritts Foundation continues to support the causes dearest to him by funding organizations that provide assistance and care for those affected by HIV and AIDS. It also promotes Ritts’s great passion for photography, offering assistance to institutions with educational programs that advance the art of photography.
